CIA|JFR hosts first Big Data conference May 23

The event will focus on security, strategy, sharing and support of big data.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research (CIA|JFR), along with the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, will bring information technology experts from around the country for their first Big Data Conference. The event to be held Thursday, May 23, 2013, is open to the public and will focus on security, strategy, sharing and support of big data.

Jean-Luc Chatelain, who co-invented SmartCell — the world’s first application-centric enterprise storage technology, is the keynote speaker. He is also a distinguished Hewlitt-Packard Fellow who led the company’s Information Optimization strategy and successfully guided them into Information Lifecycle Management (ILM).

Eta Berner, Ph.D., director of the Center for Health Informatics for Patient Safety/Quality in the UAB School of Health Professions, will take a look at the challenges that go with sharing and utilizing clinical data. Elliot Lefkowitz, Ph.D., an associate professor in the UAB Department of Microbiology, who sequences and analyzes bacterial and viral genomes, will discuss survival in the big data trenches.
